Tralhão is located in the Cima-Corgo Region, in the Tua Valley sub-region, with a 3 km river front to the Tua River, 18km from the Tua mouth to Douro.
With 12ha of vineyards and a total area of 30ha is one of the most important estates in the Tua Region
Altitudes from 100-400 meters, exposures to south, east and west and more than 8 varieties gives a complex vineyard which produces complex wines and port wines
After 2 years of studies we divide the property vineyards in 15 different plots. Each plot will go for a proposed lot o red or white, table or port wine.
The Tralhão Wines are made in partnership with Niepoort at Quinta de Nápoles.
Grapes are picked in 3 phases with suspensions: phase 1 for whites, phase 2 for red Table Wines and phase 3 for Port Wines. Suspensions occurred during harvest depend on analysis and weather prediction, normally we carry 2 suspensions period during red Table Wines and Port Wines.
Carefully hand-picked, no chemicals used in our vineyards along the year.
All fermentations are native, using the natural yeasts present on the incoming grapes without the use of nutrients. We have found that rigorous and conscientious farming that promotes biodiversity in the field produces grapes that have plenty of natural nutrition for fermentation. These native fermentations increase complexity and enhance vineyard expression. By using this natural approach, we have discovered that each of our vineyards has its own fermentation “personality”, where similar fermentation tendencies can be observed over multiple vintages. Fermentation parameters such as peak temperature, cold soak time and foot treading regime are consistent across all vineyards, producing wines whose differences are predicated on where they are from, not how they were made.
We employ barrels built from the finest French and Portuguese Oak that have been air dried for six years in Miguel Couto Ramos former sawmill in Portugal. This expensive program requires that we purchase our oak as uncoopered stave wood 6 years before the barrels are even made, but accomplishes two primary goals: very consistent barrels year after year, and wines that are differentiated entirely by the vineyard and not by the barrel. The resulting barrels are extremely gentle and help raise our wine with pure fruit rather than noticeable oak flavour. We always bottle all the barrels of a given lot.
Our process, from Vineyard works through Harvest to bottling, is based on a gentle natural system and our wines are never pumped or fined. This gentle approach is intended to deliver the purest possible reflection of our vineyards’ unique character in each bottle.
